Pressure is growing in the US state of Massachusetts for the new Wynn Boston Harbor casino development to be renamed so that it doesn’t bear the surname of Steve Wynn, until recently CEO of Wynn Resorts and currently at the centre of a sexual misconduct scandal.
Local media reports that the Massachusetts governor, Charlie Baker, has called for change of name for the development in Everett, which is set to open in 2019.
The company is also the subject of a licence review in relation to the scheme following the accusations levelled at Steve Wynn, who resigned as CEO last month.
While it is unlikely the scheme will be halted, it is possible the state will insist the Wynn name – a familiar sight, usually featured high and bright on the company’s hotel towers – be removed. According to reports, it is a notion Baker agrees with and one echoed by his attorney general Maura Healey.
Healey said: “It’s clear to me, if what’s being alleged is true, that the casino cannot bear Wynn’s name,
“I’m not convinced the company should have a licence at all,” she added.
Wynn, who founded Wynn Resorts, faces a number of allegations first raised by an article in the Wall Street Journal. Last week, Associated Press reported that two more accusations had been made dating back to the 1970s, including one of rape.
Steve Wynn denies all of the allegations.
